The First House — A Founder’s Restoration
The First House — A Founder’s Restoration
Before A Greek Dream Project, Inc. was founded, the vision of village renewal began with a personal dream and a commitment to preserving traditional village homes.
As an architect with deep family roots in Greece, I anquired and began restoring two traditional stone village houses using my own personal funds. Both homes had been unlived in for many years, reflecting a growing challenge across rural Greece, where historic houses are left empty as younger generations move to cities.
The first house was acquired in 2021 after remaining empty for many years. By that time, the roof had collapsed, leaving the structure exposed and the remaining stone walls at risk of further deterioration.
Rather than watch another piece of architectural heritage disappear, I chose to intervene and return to my roots.
To stabilize the building and prevent additional damage, I immediately hired local builders to construct a new roof. This urgent intervention protected the stone walls and preserved the structure, while allowing me to focus on preserving the second home.
As an architect, I developed restoration concepts for both properties, emphasizing traditional materials and construction methods that respect the historic character and life within the village architecture.
The restoration projects became hands-on efforts to preserve traditional architecture, support local craftsmen, and demonstrate how revitalizing even a single home can bring renewed life, hope, and energy to a declining village.
Although both homes are acquired and restored with my personal funds — and are not projects of A Greek Dream Project, Inc. — they represent my personal investment, commitment, and dream of protecting traditional villages and architectural heritage.
These restoration efforts inspired the creation of A Greek Dream Project, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization as of 2026, dedicated to preserving Greece’s architectural heritage and helping rural villages and farmers thrive again.
Today, the first house stands as a demonstration of what is possible. With care, craftsmanship, and community collaboration, empty homes can be stabilized and restored — preserving culture, supporting local construction jobs, and strengthening village economies.
This house may serve as a model for future restoration efforts, allowing donors and supporters to see how neglected stone homes can be brought back to life while maintaining traditional building techniques and supporting local artisans.
A future story will share the restoration journey of the second village home as well.
